My Oldest Brother's Heart Attack
Dear Friend,
My oldest brother, Sean, had a heart attack in July
of 2003 at age 49. Since then has been working hard
to get himself back in good shape after his cardiologist
cleared him for exercise. Here's what he recently wrote
me:
Matt,
Just thought I would drop you a note regarding the hill sprints/hill
walking
you talk about in Combat Cardio
Per your advice I started walking hills about 80 days ago and if there
is a better
exercise out there Iıd like to know what it is.
The cardiologist wonıt allow me to run, so I walk. I have the benefit
of living in
an area with a lot of hills; long ones, short ones, gradual inclines,
steep inclines,
and flat plateaus.
In the beginning I mapped out a simple course with a few gradual
inclines and
flat areas. As simple as this course was, it got me huffinı and
puffinı. After ten
days I added some tougher hills and had to stop a couple times but I
got through
it. When I didnıt have to stop anymore I added a steep incline. That
really kicked
my butt.
I now have a course that is two miles long and consists of ten ³climbs."
After my first day on this course I had to take two days off. As I was
walking
it I felt muscles all over my body being used like never before.
So hereıs the kicker. I read your email about doing it ³backwards.²
Now being a ³Furey² I couldnıt just do part of the course backwards. I
had to
do the whole thing backwards.
Well, I did it. It took me twice as long, and at the halfway point I
was wondering
about how insane it was, and sweat was rolling off me like water from a
faucet;
but the funny thing was I had my wind.
I was not out of breath even though I was really taxing myself.
When I finished the last and steepest incline I was exhilarated. I felt
like
Iıd won the Tour de France.
Between Combat Conditioning
and hill walking - ³da flab² is disappearing.
Iım down 25 pounds since I started and should reach my goal by my
birthday.
You can recover from all kinds of physical problems with these
exercises.
Just remind people to go slow, and tell their physician what they are
doing.
Iıll never climb Mt Everest, but Iıll never have a sore arse from
sitting around either.

M.F.: More on my bro: According to my Seanıs doctors, he had 30 minutes
to
live when he got to the hospital a couple years back. Thatıs cutting it
pretty
close. His recovery has been remarkable. When he started exercising
again
he could only do one repetition of many exercises. He would call and
say ³I
did 2 Hindu squats and 1 Hindu pushup.² I remember in particular a call
when
he said he had walked 200 feet, from his front door to the street.
Heıs come a long way, don't you think. And I'm damn proud of him!!!
Same goes for each and every one of you as you continually improve
your health and well being. My "hair" is off to you.
Kick butt - take names!

P.S. If you start out walking backwards you can still get to Furey Central where youıll
find the most powerful information on the planet.
