Last night I was at my favorite sauna in Shanghai. The
place is huge with enough room for at least 50 people.
Instead of wooden walls you are surrounded by glass so
that you can watch sports on the idiot box. This is something
I don’t mind so much as it keeps me up on what is happening
in the world. Other than this, I get reports from my son, who
makes it a point to memorize the scores of all the football games
on Sunday – and gives me the run down by phone. He may be
ready for ESPN’s “Stump the Schwab” in about 20 years.
This sauna is not only great because of the glass wall but for another
reason you might be surprised to make note of. Inside the enclosure
is what appears to be a hot tub – yet, instead of hot water, it is filled
with very cold water.
When I saw this I not only thought about the Finns, and how they
sit in the sauna, then run outside to roll in the snow and swim in the
lake – but the Japanese as well. In a number of old Ju-Jutsu books from
the early 1900’s, I read how they loved going from hot to cold baths,
and how this strengthened the body.
I believe it does as well – and was quick to jump in when I could no
longer handle the heat.
In the U.S. everyone is scared shitless of doing such a thing – mostly because
so many people are in such poor health they worry about it killing you. And
I suppose it can kill the slobs with bad hearts, but if you take up the practice
and mix it with a clean diet and good exercise – and if your heart isn’t on the
mend, you’ll most likely benefit from the practice in a big way.
In a few minutes I’m off to Hainan Island again, where I’m working on a few
projects that I want to release soon. I’m very excited about these ideas as they
represent information that has been deeply buried within Chinese culture for
