I don't usually think about such things until after the fact -
but for someone who used to be terrified of flying - I picked
one helluva a way to overcome my fear.
Several years ago I chose to invest in a vacation home on
China's Hainan Island.
By air it takes 22 hours - and that does NOT include transition
time from one airport to the next. There is usually a layover
of 3-4 hours in Los Angeles. Then, I usually stay a day or so
in Shanghai or Beijing before making the final leg of the flight
to Hainan.
"Do the thing you fear and the death of fear is certain," was a
saying I learned moons ago - and it's true. Sure, I could stay home,
never fly anywhere and try to convince myself that my fear had been
overcome - but tis not my definition of conquering something.
To conquer you get into the arena - you DO what you fear doing.
You overcome by exposure to the fear, not by denial of it. And
when you face your fear, you use your mind instead of letting
your mind use you.
You stay conscious. You stay awake. You notice what you're doing
to yourself to be afraid. You take note of what you're picturing in
your mind and how you've pictured it. You see how you breathe when
afraid and compare it to how you breathe when courageous. You scan
your thoughts and ferret out the ones that don't serve you - then make a
choice to focus on those that help you.
As you do this you begin to overcome your fear - or any other negative
habit pattern. Gradually you take control of the reins. And as you gain
control you figure out how to seize even more of it.
After some time in the arena of fear, you are only fearful half the time.
Then you slice that half in half and you're down to a quarter of the time.
Then 10%. Then 1%. Then never.
Occasionally you may have a brief relapse. By brief I mean 2-3 seconds. When
this happens you immediately catch yourself and get your mind back on track.
You train your mind. You are in charge. Never forget that - even when it's hard.
Next year I have a number of foreign trips planned. Not just to China - but
to Japan, Greece and other places I've never visited. None of these visits
would take place if I told myself that I was afraid of flying and there was
nothing I could do about it. None of these trips would be possible if I refused
to do the thing I feared til the death of fear was certain.
Anything you fear doing - you can do, if you'll get up and move in the midst of
the fear.
Fear is not subject to reason very often - but it is always subject to movement.
Make a choice to move - and often - and you'll be the master of your fate, the
lord of your destiny.

This morning I gave thanks for three things:
1. My health - physical, mental and spiritual
2. My family - my wife, my son and daughter,
my parents, siblings and all those friends who
are like "family" to me
3. My clients and customers - YOU have given
me a grand and glorious life and I am eternally
grateful to you for that.
As a young boy I was taught to say grace before
each meal, to start and end each day with a prayer
of thanks.
Regardless of your beliefs, I think it's a good practice -
and one we can never perfect. By this I mean you can
never get so good at expressing gratitude that you no
longer need to do it. Gratitude is a lifelong practice.
Thanksgiving is a day we celebrate - but gratitude is
a state of being we choose to tap into or out of. Life is
ultimately better when you tap into it.
And so, on this Thanksgiving Day - I send a heart-felt
thank you for all you've contributed to my life.

Fitness aside for a moment - I get mucho
questions from readers of this e-letter, asking

Late last night I was out for a walk - only this time
not by myself. As I headed out the door with a friend
I began telling him how the average person is completely
unconscious of his day-to-day habits and thinking,
and therefore is unable to recreate success over and
over again.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Well, this may sound odd, but when a major celebrity
agrees to an appearance, there is often a lengthy contract
that goes into illustrious detail about what he or she wants
the hotel room to be like. It'll state what kind of bed, what
kind of robes, what kind of soap, water, and so on."
"Okay."
"And this may seem very odd and strange to the average
person. He might think, 'What a primadonna.' But the major
celeb may be making all these requests because he knows, in
illustrious detail, what creates a success experience. He also
knows, if he's been paying attention, what creates a failure
experience."
"Take myself, for example. One of the things I figured out
as a competitive martial artist and wrestler was that I needed
to get up early and go for a run on the days that I competed in
a tournament. I came to this conclusion after competing in a
number of tournaments wherein my first match was abominable.
I felt like I was still asleep during the match. After losing I figured out
that some early morning running would open my lungs and get my
entire mind/body ready for battle - I never forgot to employ this
success habit."
"No one else on the team that I'm aware of did this. For whatever
reason they didn't need to. But I did. And failure to follow what works
always spelled dis-aster for me. On the other hand, when I did the things I
did when I was at my best, I got into a "success groove" and it seemed
I could not fail."
Whether in sports, business or any creative endeavor - this same scenario
applies. If you keep track of what you did and what you thought on the days
you were at your best, and if you keep repeating those things, you increase your
chances for success dramatically.
So keep track of what works - as well as what doesn't work. Repeat what works.
Discontinue what doesn't work.
A simple formula, I know. But it won't do you any good unless you start to become
conscious of your thoughts, behaviors and the results they produce.

Yesterday, when I was preparing for bed, I started
thinking about my upcoming trip back to my vacation

Sgt. X
Today I'm going to give you three quick yet
mercilessly powerful tips on how you can improve
your flexibility fast, no matter what your cotton-pickin
age.
Here goes:
1. When you stretch, breathe deeply and fully. Fill your
lungs to full capacity. Inhale all the way down so you're
filling the lower lungs. Inhale even more so that you can
feel your rib cage and your chest expand.
If you put your hand on your pecs (or chest) you should
be able to feel it expand on the inhale.
Now, once you've held the inhale for a few seconds, relax
and let it go. Doing this will let go of physical and mental
stress and help you relax more deeply into each stretch.
2. Once you've done some deep breathing for the lungs,
now let's do some for the muscles. In fact, let's do something
that is supposedly physiologically impossible. Let's breathe
right into the muscle we're stretching. For example, if you're
stretching your hamstrings, let's inhale into the hamstring.
Just imagine doing so and you'll feel the difference.
No, you do not have 'lungs' in your hamstrings. But if your
intent is to direct your inhale into your hamstrings, believe me
now and listen to me later, you'll feel the difference. Your hamstring
will begin to relax and upon each exhale, the muscles will unlock
and give your more elasticity.
3. Good job. You've done number one and two, now you have one
of two choices - both of which I teach, depending on the situation.
The first is that you can contract and relax the muscle you're
stretching. Flex the muscle for several seconds, then relax and
voila - you instantly can go further than before. I teach this is my

The second choice involves simply giving your muscles the command to 'relax.'
It follows the idea of telling yourself what to do via self-suggestion.
This principle can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to increase strength,
endurance, power and speed. It can even be used to improve your health, your
appearance and how you age.
No, it's not mere affirmations. It's programming your body to do what you want
via a combination of deep breathing, relaxing, flexing and effective commands
that bypass the conscious mind giving you instantaneous and rapid results.

Last night I turned on the tube to take a rest from work.
I flipped the channel to HBO.
Immediately I recognized the face of a football legend being
interviewed. He had such a presence about him that I couldn't
even entertain the idea of changing channels.
Who was this man?
Jim Brown, NFL Hall-of Fame running back, a man who literally
ran over his opponents when he played for the Cleveland Browns
in the 1960's.
Partway through the movie Brown began talking about attitude. He
said that everything boils down to your attitude. Then he mentioned
Psycho-Cybernetics as a book he read that played an important role
in his success. He mentioned the book twice. He did not mention any
other books during the program.
Additionally, one of the things I found MOST intriguing was how Jim
Brown said he and a few teammates would get together the night before
a game to review their playbook. But they referred to it as their "attitude
play book." They reviewed their ATTITUDE toward the plays they were going
to be running.
How does this relate to YOU?
Well, let's say tonight before you go to bed, you make a list of some of the
things you need to do tomorrow. And after you've made this list, you look it
over and ask yourself what you attitude is toward each item on the list.
Once you know what your attitude toward each item is, you can make a choice
to adjust it. You can change the way you're picturing the situation. And as you
picture it you can alter your attitude, putting more enthusiasm, more passion

My friend Jeremiah Perez just came out with an incredible

This morning I woke up to the sound of my 2-year old
daughter, Faith, crying. I walked to her bedroom and saw my
wife consoling her.
Faith was distraught because before brushing her teeth,
she got the un-wise idea to insert her tooth brush into
the toilet. Luckily Zhannie caught her before she put
the brush into her mouth. She grabbed it from her - no
easy task even with a 2-year old - and tossed it into the
garbage.
Faith went nuts. It was her favorite tooth brush. Sponge
Bob. Her idol.
Later today she'll get a new tooth brush. Hopefully she
learned her lesson.
As I was thinking about this scenario this morning, I
couldn't keep myself from laughing. "You know," I
thought, "the weight loss secret I am revealing in the

Imagine getting on the floor to do a couple
pushups. But to make it harder on yourself you
stretch both arms over your head instead of keeping
them beneath your shoulders.

Last May, a man who is 6' 5' tall and 260 pounds goes to
my hotel room to be interviewd for a program made for
tee-vee.
Unbeknownst to me, he put on quite a show for the camera
crew. The S.O.B. tore up my phone book.
He tore right down the middle, through the cover. He didn't
break the binding or cheat in any way. I know because the
camera crew showed me the footage of what he did.
Last January, at my health and fitness seminar, this same
guy, John Wood, ripped a Tampa Bay phonebook in half
while in a bridge. Not an easy strength feat. The audience
went wild.
But there's a little guy, a strong man who is about half the size
of John Wood. And he can tear a phone book in half even when
it's wrapped in duct tape. He can even tear one in half with two
fingers.
What's more, the little guy can tear a corner out of the book - again
with two fingers.

And the technique he uses is pure power. There's no cheating. No
cooking the phone book. No popping the spine or cracking the

My son, Frank, and I watched the little guy's DVD this past weekend.

Several years ago I used to hop a plane,
travel across the country to a differnet city,
give a seminar, then fly home.
With few exceptions, I no longer do this.
Each week I am asked to speak at events,
seminars and so on. I almost always decline.
Not interested in traveling very often, except
for when it involves a vacation.
When I announced my 2007 Fitness Bootcamp,

The last two times I have spoken in public
I told the gut and heart-wrenching story about
how my face became disfigued.
I told about my scars.
It was painful to do so. I didn't like telling this
story. It hurt to do so. But I felt compelled to
speak about something that I had only written
about before. And speaking about it changed ME
and ... to my surprise, others.
During breaktime of my 3-hour presentation
last Thursday night, a number of people
approached me with tears in their eyes,
telling me how DEEPLY they were moved
by what I said. One man turned his head to
the side to show me the scars he lives with.
I could sense a deep sadness as he told me
this. I immediately painted a new face for
him to focus on with my hand - a face outside
his face - a face that transcends the pain and
agony he has lived with.
He began to brighten and awaken before my
eyes. I told him what I have come to know -
all scars can be turned into stars - if we'll let
go and look for the advantage.
As a young wrestler, whenever I lost or felt
the sting of defeat, my father took me aside
and said, "You have a knack for turning a
disadvantage into an advantage. Let's see
what you do with this one."
This always changed my mindset. I didn't know
I had this knack - and the truth is I probably
didn't to a great extent - but when my father
planted this seed - he helped MAKE IT
HAPPEN.
In any area of your life where you feel pain,
anguish - in any area where you feel all is
lost and the suffering is too great - I can
assure you, as my father did, you have a
knack for turning things around to your
advantage. All you need to do is LOOK for
a way and it will show its face.

Just got back from a walk along the beach with a
couple clients. While trapsing across the sand and
shells - and avoiding the jelly fish that are in the
shallow waters, I explained to them the importance
of "taking a pause" from technology.
As great as our computers, cell phones and other
gadgets are - I believe they can also be a curse.
People today are MORE mesmerized by their gadgets
than anything else. And with this techno-hypnosis comes
amnesia for WHO and WHAT created the technology.
People created these gadgets with the power of thought.
But those who use the gadgets forget that YOU are the
owner of the greatest Super Computer in the Universe.
YOU are both broadcasting and receiving station. YOU
are the one who creates - not the other way around.
In my seminars I don't allow any techno gadgets of
any kind. At first, the techno-addicts are irritated.
But, if they're open, they soon realize that I'm doing
them a favor.
Some cannot stand it so they try to sit in the back row with a
Blackberry, or some other gadget on their lap, scrolling
emails when they could be listening to the message. Even
if the person gets away with it, which is only temporary, what
has he gained?
Nothing.
I carry a cell phone with me much of the time - yet I rarely
answer it unless it is family or someone I am expecting a
call from. I have no problem pausing and letting the thing
ring without answering. Doesn't bother me if someone
is angry about this either.
The other day I was talking to a guy who said, "You know,
remember when we didn't have voice mail, email or FAX. If
you weren't home and the phone rang - you still managed to
go on living. Now with all the technology, people feel
they can't get anything done even though they are "on call"
all the time."
Good point.
Use technology to enhance your life - but don't let it control you.
Know when to say no.
Take a pause. It's good to give yourself space.
Take time to sit quietly and breathe. Breathe into the Super
Computer within. Delete the garbage. Make space for new
information.
Do this and I guarantee you'll get more fulfillment out of life.

Last February I met a man from British Columbia
at one of my seminars.
He was around 35 years old - and really down in
the dumps. He was trying deperately to lift himself
up - but it was hard.
Part of the reason, no doubt, had to do with the recent
death of his wife - to that ugliest of all diseases, cancer.
When this man lost his wife - he felt all hope was lost -
that he would never find love again. Day by day he grew
more reclusive, more fearful - and more unwilling to reach
out for more.
I encouraged him - told him he needed to begin again, to
renew himself. He told me he didn't even know where or
how to begin again. I introduced him to a man I know who

Ten days ago, at the conclusion of 5-straight days
of high-intensity teaching/coaching - Bennie Harris,
one of my MasterMind members, came up to me with

He began talking to me about the work he does in Iraq -
and how so many of the soldiers follow my Combat

I was in tears as he presented me with these gifts. Although
I was emotionally drained after five days of giving all I had,
I still had a deep well to draw from when I received these
items. And of all the gifts I have received, and I get many -
THESE I treasure greatly. I let no one else touch them, including
my son, Frank, whom I showed them to when I got home.
The first thing Frank wanted to do was unravel the flag and look
it over. I told him no. THIS flag was special.
He asked why. I told him it came from U.S. Soldiers in Iraq. I told
him it was precious and was to remain inside the plastic I received
it in.
I told him I don't want a speck of dust to ever touch it.
Yes, I realize that some people don't agree with the war in Iraq.
I am not about to argue the point one way or the other. What I do
want to do, though, is take a moment - way in advance of Thanksgviing -
to pay special tribute to all the men and women in Iraq.
To all involved with sending me these gifts, from the depths of my soul,
I THANK YOU.
And to all the others serving in the U.S. Military - no matter where you
are - on behalf of my wife and family - THANK YOU. We have great love
