7 Keys to a Metabolism Makeover
Why is it that people who are overweight
take so long to enjoy results when on an
exercise program. And why is it that they
think they need to do long-distance cardio
and spend hours per day training.
You don't need to do things that way.
There's a way to accelerate your metabolism and
I'll lay it out for you in a minute, but first,
understand the following:
A. If you are investing a LOT of time each day
to kick-start your metabolism - you're doing
something wrong.
B. Long-slow cardio may make you feel good -
but if you want to "STEP UP" your metabolism,
you're far better off doing a very hard, very
vigorous workout that calls upon all your physical
and mental reserves. You're better off with a
short workout that will never get easy - no
matter how often you do it.
Consider the sprinter. He does not do long distance
cardio. Yet his body is lean AND muscular.
It is rare to find a long distance cardio person who
is well built. He may be lean, but there's no muscle
and usually very little power. Not only that, but after
a period of time - the long cardio workout person
may end up suffering from hip, knee, ankle and lower
back pain.
Why.
All the pounding on the joints. It takes a tremendous
toll on the body.
Instead of the long, slow, dull approach to fitness,

Makeover.
1. Change the mental picture you have of yourself. All
lasting change in appearance begins in your mind. If
you want to look better, start seeing yourself the way
you'd like to look.
2. Place the majority of your mental focus on "the journey"
- the process you are following to get fit. This means you
are NOT continually thinking about reaching the mountain
top. Instead you're focused on each step along the way.
3. Begin doing vigorous full body body weight exercises that
force you to lose control of your breathing. If you aren't getting
out of breath when you train, your system is NOT being forced
to adapt and change very much. The harder you are breathing,
the more shock to the system. The more "shock" there is - the
greater the shake-up in your metabolism. The exercises in

4. Instead of running or bicycling several miles per day to get
your cardio - do like the cheetah. Run as hard as you can, at
full blast, for as long as you can. Run with all your might.
When finished you want to be gasping for oxygen. You want
to feel like you have nothing left. In Combat Conditioning there
are a few sprint workouts you can follow to get you going with
this routine.
5. Practice deep breathing. The deeper you breathe the more
oxygen in your system. The more oxygen in your system, the
faster your metabolism.
6. Eat plenty of fiber rich, water-content foods while avoiding
starchy foods most of time.
7. Get plenty of sleep.

5 Second Abs for the Toilet
The other day I received an email from a 48-year
old man who complained of not being able to move
his bowels on a regular basis.
"The machine isn't working the way it used to. Maybe
I need some lubrication," he wrote. "Any exercises you
recommend for this situation. Or is this just something
I have to live with."
The answer: No, this is not something you have to live
with. Here is what you do:
1. Make a decision that you will regain healthy bowel
function.
You may think this an unnecessary step - yet I assure
you that trying to solve this issue without making a
decision to replace it with something better, leaves the
door wide open for a repeat performance of bad times.
2. Pay attention to the foods that are clogging your
pipes. Pizza, pasta, white flour, pastries, breads,
beans and other starches are often times interfering
with regularity.
3. Consume more fruits, vegetables and other high-
fiber foods.
4. Drink plenty of water.
5. Practice deep breathing exercises - especially those
in which you combine abdominal flexing with the breathing.

Forget Time Management
A lot of people use the term "time management" -
but there's really no such thing.
You cannot manage time - nor can you control it.
You can only choose to do or not do certain things.
That's it.
Sort of like the sun. You cannot manage or control
the sun - or the moon. But you can choose to be
outdoors in view of it - or indoors out of view.
You've probably become accustomed to hearing
other people (and quite possibly yourself) saying,
"There's not enough time in the day" or "I don't
have any time."
Since when are we the decider on how much time
there should be in each day. And how can you not
have any time.
Time and energy are all we have. You either use them
to the full - for things that matter to you - or you use
them for anything that grabs your attention at the
moment.
Saying "there's no time" is like saying "there's no muney."
There are always plenty of both. Depends on your view.
And not your view on the outside. It depends upon how
you see things on the inside.
The next time you think there's a shortage of time - or
think that you need to manage time - change your
mental picture to the following:
"I have time to do what is most important to me."
Now, you may be wondering if I have a "system" that
helps me get everything that's important to me done.
I sure do - and I can assure you it's not one of those
"planners" you see people lugging around.

Five Second Abs in the Shower
Last week I wrote about doing abdominal exercises while
at a stoplight or while flying across the country. Or from
country to country.
All you need to do is follow the advice of Farmer Burns
and spend 2-5 seconds flexing your abs in a certain way
whilst combining it with deep breathing. This alone can
change your midsection... and quickly, too.
Today I am going to reveal another place where you can
work your abs. And if you haven't already guessed the
'where and when' - let me make it crystal clear: it's the
shower.
Get under the shower, relax and let the water pour over y
our nekked body. Inhale deeply and give your abs the five
second treatment. Do it again and again. Ten reps of five
seconds per day will do wonders for your digestion, your
circulation, your energy, your overall health... and of perhaps
the greatest delight to you, your waistline.
This exercise really, really works. And how much time do you
need for it when you combine it with activities you're already
doing. I would think your body is worth five seconds of
exercise, don't you.

My Wife Doesn't Believe It
Last night I received the following email from a
reader in India. It's got SUCCESS written all over
it. Read and see why:
Dear Matthew
I too would like to tell you my experience with my eight-year
old son, Mehul, in far away India.
In India we have a ranking system in school. Mehul stood
eighth rank in the first term exams. During that time i was
reading Psycho-Cybernetics and I trusted that this book
will surely make him leap to the first rank. So from the
very next day i asked him to meditate for only 10 minutes.
He was to visualize that the principal of the school called
out his name for the first rank and he was going ahead
to pick the trophy. i asked him visualize in vivid details
everything - the smile on his friends face, the standing
ovation he got etc.
He too believed in this idea and never missed a single day
of visualization. You won't believe it the class teacher called
and informed us just before the third term was to start that
Mehul has stood first in his class.
I would like to add that he still continues his visualization
without missing even a single day and his performance in
all the spheres has been top class. He was a timid introverted
boy and now people don't believe whether he is the same guy.
He is developing into a talented dancer when before he was
not able to stand in front of an audience.
i don't understand when it is so easy to make a eight year
old boy understand the power of visualization, the grown
ups are so skeptical and doubtful when I suggest this
technique. I feel they fear success more then anything
else.
My wife has seen this transformation but when i suggest
it to her turn to try this great method she does not seem
enthusiastic. It will be many more times more effective for
her but i am not able to convince her.

MJF: Manoj, first off, I commend you for the positive influence
you are having on your son. Now that he is in the top rank it
is important to continually emphasize to him that the journey
is, in truth, more important than the rank. If he continually
puts forth his best effort, and does not need to be motivated
by external awards, if he is inspired rather than motivated, I
think you and he will both be all the better for it.
As for your wife, it is not your job to make sure she believes
everything you believe or that your son believes. Continue to
love her and support her even if she never opens to these
teachings. YOU and you alone are under your control. Your
son took to visualization because he wanted to. You've been
the guide - yet he could have refused to be open, too, if he
wanted.
If you always remember to ask yourself, when frustrated,
what is and what isn't under your control; what is and
what isn't your business - I believe you'll enjoy even more
moments of inner peace and happiness than you now
experience.

America, the Obese-iful
I love America. And I love American people.
I do have to admit, however, it's getting harder
and harder to wrap your arms around this
country and its people.
We used to call people fat. Now we use the
word 'obese." Very soon the word obese will
need replacing with something else that
describes us better.
The basic issue underlying all the fatness
is bad thinking followed by bad habits.
It begins with a lack of pride and a lack of
self-respect.
Instead of having a desire to be better today
than you were yesterday - people think they're
doomed to be worse tomorrow than they are today.
That's wrong thinking.
That's believing in death and disease more than life
and good health.
To counter the way of fatness and self-pity, begin
with your thinking. Begin imagining yourself to be
better than you are right now. Say to yourself, "Today,
I'm going to give it everything I've got. I'm going to do
my best."
Then, instead of lazing on the couch - you make an
appointment with yourself to exercise each day.
You do something each and every day to challenge yourself.
In doing so you improve yourself in ALL areas of your life. When
your body is in better condition, you think faster, you get more done,
you're happier, healthier - and no, I'm not kidding, wealthier.
Some time ago, after doing the Royal Court, as shown in my
international best-seller, Combat Conditioning (to order go
to http://mattfurey.com/conditioning_book.html } I went out-
side to jump some rope. I hadn't jumped in quite a while so
I set a modest goal of 1,000 jumps - using a rope I call -
"the green monster" - which is much heavier than the
standard ropes.
Now, 1,000 jumps with this rope is no easy task. It blitzes
your entire body - including your grip, forearms, shoulders
and so on.
When I got to 200 jumps the thought of quitting entered my
mind. But I knew I had more in me, so after a break, I continued.
I kept pushing myself until I finished all 1,000 jumps. I looked
at my stop watch. 15:34.
The next evening I went outdoors and did the same workout. I
cranked out 200, then took a quick rest. Then did 100. Another
quick rest. 50 more. And so on.
I pushed myself to do better than I did the day before. And when
I knocked out the 1,000th repetition, the stop watch read: 12:05.
Today, beating either of these numbers is easy.
Now, in case you think I'm impressed with this, I'm not. My focus
is on giving my workout everything I've got. Somedays I may not
be able to jump as fast as others. Or I may be much faster. The
real issue is how hard did I try in each workout. My focus is on
THIS WORKOUT - to-DAY.
Many people set goals that are "result driven." This means they want
to get to a certain weight - or be able to do a selected number of
pushups or pull-ups.
It's good to have result goals. But it's also good to have "being" goals.
The focus is on WHO you are going to BE when you train - not on what
you are going to get. Your mind is on the journey - not the destination.
Afterall, if the journey is more important than the "end" - then why so
much focus on the end.
Why not have the beginning and end of your journey be the same. The
circle that meets - no beginning - no end.
Focus your mind on the journey - on being totally in the moment in
this workout.
Give it everything you've got. And watch the results stack higher than
ever before.

What We're Teaching Kids Today
The other day, John, a member of my Psycho-Cyb
coaching program, sent me the following note:
Matt,
My 9 year old grandson has been having some trouble
in school over the last few months. My wife and daughter
were offering the usual threats/incentives. I took a different
tack. I told him that every morning when he gets out of bed
to imagine he is holding a HUGE report card that fills the room
and that there are A's and B's on it.
Also, that there's all sorts of people who want to high five
him for the good grades. And to jump around the room
high fiving all those people. You should see the smile
on his face as he thinks about it.
Friday, I go over to his house to pick him up for the
weekend and right away he pulls me over to show
me his work book for the week. He says "Papa, I've
been magining."
And the papers he showed me ALL SHOW IMPROVEMENT.
Matt, I love this little boy more than I've loved anyone
in the whole world. There's no words that allow me to
thank you enough for teaching me how to help him.

MJF: John, the pleasure is all mine. What we teach young
children is incredibly important. And as you've said, it
all starts in the 'magination.
Let me tell you a similar story with my son, Frank.
On Saturday Frank was getting ready for his
final soccer game of the year. It's his first year in this
sport while many of the other kids in the league are
already in their third and fourth season. So Frank has
had a lot of catching up to do.
Before Saturday's game, for the entire season, Frank
had only scored three goals. I told Frank that this number
was nothing to be ashamed of. Most important was that
he try his hardest; that he put forth his best effort, win or
lose, every time he plays.
Then I told him that the three goals he'd made were successful
experiences he could draw energy from and re-create,
over and over.
He asked how, so I guided him through a very quick
visualization, reliving the three goals he made. Then
I told him to imagine scoring one goal after another.
He did this for five minutes or so.
That was it.
Well, guess what happened in the game. Frank scored
a goal.
But not just one goal.
And not just two.
He scored THREE goals in the same game.
Young children's minds are wide open to the power of
suggestion. When you teach them how to imagine, how
to visualize, the results can come FAR, FAR FASTER than
adults who are skeptical and filled with doubt and fear.
Reminds me of the Bible passage on how we must become
like little children to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Hey, I Made a Mistake
One of the things that separates what I teach and what
Dr. Maltz taught about "mind power" is the importance
of making mistakes.
If you read the words of so many of today's "thinkers" on
subjects like the Law of Attraction - you'll find that there
is rarely any talk about mistakes or failure.
People then develop the notion that if they're making mistakes
or failing - that they're "attracting" it. In some cases this is most
definitely true.
But you've got to look at the bigger picture to see the bigger
truth.
Mistakes are HOW we learn everything we know. From learning
to crawl, walk, run, talk and feed ourselves. We make mistakes
and correct course until the only thing your brain remembers
is the "right" way to do something.
You learned to write by making mistakes.
You learn to become a great athlete the same way.
Getting back to the metaphor Dr. Maltz so ably used - missile
technology - a torpedo is "off target" most of the time on the
way to its pre-programmed destination.
So are you and that's the way it's supposed to be. That's the
way you succeed.
And so, if you're afraid of making mistakes - if you keep yourself
from doing because you're worried you may do the wrong thing -
then take comfort in the words of Elbert Hubbard, who said:
"The greatest mistake a man can make is to be afraid of making
one."
Oh, how true.
This does not mean that you deliberately make mistakes. You'll make
plenty without trying to do so. But when you make a mistake, instead
of whining or pouting about it, make a note and determine how to
correct course. Most importantly, keep moving.
On top of the above, rejoice when you make a mistake. You're now
one or more steps closer to your goal.
