Where Are You Now
We're nearly three months into the New Year.
How far along are you with your health and fitness
goals.
How consistent are you with your routine.
Are you hit and miss - or hit, hit, hit.
I can tell you right now, at least 95% of the people
reading this are NOT on target. Most are dilly-dallying
around.
Very little focus. Very little guts, determination and
resolve.
Easily distracted by every whim and caprice.
No will. No imagination.
Just a bundle of frustration.
And 5% is a generous estimate.
Those who are kicking butt as well as those who really
WANT to march or shoot to the next level of success in their
training - all have one thing in common.
They are going to my fitness seminar this May.
They're not satisfied with what they've attained thus far
and they know one good kick in the ass from me will do
them a lot of good. They also know that multiple kicks
will do even more good.
The worst thing in a person's life is self-delusion or
fear of looking at the truth about yourself.
Thing is, as soon as you shine the light of truth on
yourself - you are set loose so that you can stretch,
grow, and become all you deeply desire.
Never be satisfied with yourself. Never think you've made
it, that you've succeeded. That you know enough. That you
know a lot. That you know it all.
Never listen to those who brag about all they've read, all
they supposedly know or how there's nothing new to them
under the sun.
These people are fearful and weak, puffed with false pride
and egotism.
Great men and women know that they never know enough -
that there are secrets on top of secrets on top of secrets.
Great men and women know that anyone who thinks he
knows a lot - knows nothing.
The wise man or woman is focused on WHAT he still has
to learn. In spite of his wisdom and knowledge, he still
possesses a fascination, wonder and inquisitive attitude
toward all he sees. Those who are WISE understand the
exponential value of learning just one new thing - and
how one thing, when properly used, can apply massive
leverage to their life.
There is no such thing as a destination called success.
Success is a journey from one target to the next. Success
is the feeling you experience NOW when you are on that
journey.
It begins from within.
If you think you've failed over and over - or if you're afraid
you are going to fail some more - you are right - if you
continue on the same course you've been traveling.
But if you jump up even one inch, you can build a new
set of tracks, a new road to travel - a road that will
give you the results you want. If you take one step
in the direction of what I have to offer you - the journey
toward success will begin for you.
The worst thing in the world is failure to seize an
opportunity to improve yourself. And, my friend, there is
no greater opportunity on this planet at this time than
what I have for store for you in May.
Don't make excuses - make progress.
Don't whine - WIN.
Don't cry - TRY.
Don't hesitate - ACCELERATE.
Don't shrink - THINK.
Get yourself into motion. Move. Do something GREAT to
make yourself better.

Ache of the Day
Lately I've been getting more and more emails
about hand, wrist and elbow pain. Today I'll cover
a recent email about elbow tendonitis and some
exercises to be smart about:
Mr. Furey,
I've been training off and on for over 20 years, and
recently after a two-year layoff I started on pull-ups
and rope climbing and my elbows are killing me.
Any idea why and what I can do about it.
Thanks,
Jim
MJF: Jim, most likely you have one of two things going
on. First, when you're doing pull-ups or chin-ups you're
not doing a full range of motion. You might be stopping
short of letting your arms gently lockout. This can cause
tendonitis, elbow pain, etc. Ed Baran covers this in the
course we did on Primate Power - you can read about it
at http://mattfurey.com/primate_power.html
Rope climbing can also be brutal on your elbows. The main
reason may be that your muscles are currently stronger than
your tendons - so the imbalance can lead to injury. If this is
the situation, I suggest a couple remedies. First, to combat
the inflammation use a Chinese liniment called Zheng Gu Shui.
You can do a search and find it all over the place. I always have
plenty of supply on hand to remove any soreness I may have in
my joints after a workout.
I also suggest you get my program on eliminating carpal tunnel
syndrome pain within 30 days. In this course there are a number
of exercises for strengthening the tendons of the elbow. You'll
find them helpful. Order by going to http://carpaltunnelfix.com
Keep me posted on how this works for you.
Get Tough,
Matt Furey
P.S. The Matt Furey Inner Circle special report and DVD are going
out this week - along with information on my fitness seminar this
May - http://GetTough.com - make sure you enroll NOW to avoid
the fee increase going into effect very, very soon.
How To BEAT Back Pain at Work
If you suffer from any type of back pain,
you know that it can make work almost
impossible sometimes - heck, I know of
people who've lost their jobs because of it.
So that's why I wanted to share this great article
with you about how you can "beat back pain at work".
I hope you find this helpful:- Matt Furey
How to BEAT Back Pain at Work
by Jesse Cannone, CFT, CPRS. MFT
It's getting to be so bad that by Monday afternoon, you're
already tired of being at the office. You're not even thinking
as far ahead as Friday.
In reality, it's not the folks you work with who are getting
you down - they're tolerable, mostly, although there is that
one guy in accounting. Where do they find these people?
It's not even your boss, who, if he knew even half as much as
you do, would be a shoo-in for Executive of the Year.
No, the biggest pain in your neck is actually located a bit
lower. And it's really what's making working where you do
seem a lot worse than it actually is.
Face it. It's your aching back that's sucking the joy out of
your nine-to-five existence and making you feel 10 years older
to boot.
Sure, you've learned to tolerate the bad coffee, pointless
meetings, and lame jokes in the course of your day. But you
just can't tough it out when it comes to back pain, which can
range from dull, nagging aches to those unexpected twinges
that feel like you've been hit with a taser gun.
The bad news about back pain is that it not only lives with
you all day at the office but it also comes home with you at
night. It may even dog your weekends.
How do you develop pain?
If you are experiencing back pain at the office, you may think
that it is coming from all the sitting, standing, and lifting
that you have to do. And, indirectly, it does. But it is
actually more about how the body has to adapt to all the
sitting, standing, and lifting than the activity itself. Let's
take sitting as an example.
Because of the amount of time you spend sitting, your body must
gradually adapt itself to that position. This happens in a
number of ways. The first thing it must adapt to is how the
weight goes through your hips and pelvis. Then, there is the
way you sit - upright, slouching, or something in between.
Most importantly, it's what happens to the muscles while you're
sitting. For example, your hip flexors will get tight from
being in a shortened position and your butt will get weak and
flabby from being in a relaxed state.
That simple combination of tight hip flexors and weak glutes is
called a "muscle imbalance." The result of these muscle imbalances
will be postural dysfunctions of your pelvis and spine. These
imbalances send both your spine and pelvis into abnormal positions,
the combination of which can be devastating to a person with a healthy
back and catastrophic for a person suffering from any form of back pain.
What can you do about it.
What you must also understand is that your imbalances are the
result of what you do in your everyday life - your workouts,
sitting, the activities of your job, and your own personal
habits. I'm not going to tell you to stop going to work. But
what if you changed the way you present yourself at your desk.
Instead of sitting at your desk, try kneeling. I kneel at least
30 percent of the time I spend at my desk. I have a small foam
pad that puts me just high enough to type and see the monitor.
I sit on a therapy ball - and guess what. I don't sit still like
my momma told me to. I move my hips in every direction,
which means I'm working on my core balance all day long.
----------------------
Action steps to take
----------------------
Sitting
When I sit, I sit with my legs in all different positions -
sometimes bent, sometimes behind me, other times stretched out
in front or even to the side of me, keep the legs moving.
Every 10 minutes or so, I will work my body in some way - and,
yes, that includes walking away from my desk. But more than that,
I make it a habit to stand up when the phone rings. I also stand
when I have to read something or when I'm rearranging the stack
of stuff on my desk for greater productivity.
Standing
If your job requires you to stand all day long, be sure you have
quality footwear and a neutral shoe insert. Our body mechanics
start when our feet hit the ground. It is best if your feet are
in the most neutral position possible.
One negative body pattern that many people fall into is to
continually shift their weight from one foot to the other. The
problem with this is that most people find eventually decide that
one leg will be more comfortable than the other, and then that leg
will get most of the weight most of the time. This will wreak havoc
on the pelvis and spine. Better to put equal on each foot as much
as you can, and learn to correct when you catch yourself shifting
your weight or leaning on one leg too much.
Lifting
A third obstacle on the job can be situations where you have to
lift anything over 10 pounds repeatedly. Again, it's not the
activity itself that puts you in jeopardy; it's your body's
inability to tolerate the stress of the weight. In other words,
you should be able to lift anything you want to and not have any
difficulty doing it. The problem occurs when your body is
suffering from the muscle imbalances and postural dysfunction
that we talked about earlier - and you don't even know it.
So, when you lift that object and you get injured, think of it
as the straw that broke the camels' back. Your body was already
in a compromised state, and it just needed that last bit of stress
to send you in to a painful condition.
Stress
It's an unavoidable fact of life at the office, and it can also
play a role by causing your muscles to tense up, which makes you
more prone to injury. Stress also lowers your tolerance for pain.
In some cases, minimizing stress on the job can be a daunting task,
but deep-breathing exercises, walking around the block, or even
talking about your frustrations with a trusted friend can help.
In closing, I want to leave you with this message: Even though
the workplace can be a hazard to your health, if you do find
yourself having back pain, remember that your thoughts and your
beliefs about your situation will have a direct impact on your ab
ility to recover and how fast you recover. That's why it's critical to
learn all you can about your condition and take action as soon as
you can.

Good for Basketball, Baseball, Football and Hockey
Last week a number of athletes wrote in, from various
sports, asking if the Combat Conditioning program will
work for them.
The answer is "yes" - if you practice the program.
Over the years I've received many testimonials from many
different coaches and athletes, from grade school to junior
high and high school, to college - and to through the pros.
Here's one I just found, from Nick Nurse, who coaches an
NBA D League program in Des Moines, Iowa, and will
most likely be a top level NBA head coach within the
next couple years.
Here's what Nick wrote when he was coaching a pro team
in Brighton, England - where he was coach of the year several
times:
Matt,
I have been coaching professional basketball in Europe for
about 10 years and just wanted to drop you a line to let
you know that we are getting excellent results using your
Combat Conditioning.
I initially read your daily email where you emphasised some
simple things that made a lot of sense to me as a coach -
and I thought they would translate well to pro hoops players.
Your prophecies of hill sprints and jumping rope is where we
started when we gathered for pre-season because we wanted
to get in shape quick.
The program worked in more ways than one.
It worked both physiologically and it worked psychologically.
Our guys knew they were working hard, (and probably harder
than other teams in the league) which made them think they
were in better condition than their opponents.
The key ingredient of a champion or a championship team
is conditioning.
I know when I played that I was not faster or quicker than
most of the guys I went head to head with but I was stronger
and could wear into them over the course of the game with
superior mindset and conditioning.
We try to impress this upon our players and your methods
help us to do this.
The other things that we use are the Hindu's as our guys
like to call them.
Both the Hindu squats and the Hindu push-ups are part
of our weekly routine. We do them regularly and we do
them as rewards for games that we play in practice.
The team that wins a game in training gets a reward
of watching the other team knock out set of Hindu's.
We also do the Hindu poker on our workout days. We
bring a deck of cards to the gym and split the team
up in 2 groups and start turnin' cards. Red for Hindu
push ups and black for the Hindu squats. We will rip
thru the deck a couple of times and then play a game
of "WAR." Again, two teams and the higher card wins
and the lower card team has to do the amount of
squats on the card.
It moves pretty quickly and they get to talk a little
smack back and forth so they enjoy that while
getting a great work out which is what I care about.
Anyway, I guess I just wanted to say thanks. Our teams
here are not always the most talented but we win year
after year.
We believe in being in great shape, and your Combat
Conditioning has been an invaluable tool for our club.
We like kickin butt and takin names, even on the basketball
court.
Best,
Nick Nurse

You're Not Ready Yet
Take a look at the following emails and see if you
can find yourself in them somewhere:
Mr. Furey,
I am a minor league baseball player and I want to
know how your training can help me. Thank you for
your answer.
Sandy
MJF: Who wants to know. The skeptic or the person
willing to do the program to find out. I can tell you
about all the benefits of Combat Conditioning -
http://mattfurey.com/conditioning_book.html - and
have done so. No matter whether you're a martial
artist, football player, basketball player, baseball
player or hockey player or swimmer - or person who
is determined not to be a couch potato or computer
blob - my program works. Use it and you'll feel
it.
Mr. Furey,
I'd like to try your program but I feel that I'm not
ready yet. I think I'll be ready next year when my
astro chart is more aligned with my life purpose.
Thanks for your energy.
Shelley
MJF: Shelley, success has to do with something
called SELF-IMAGE. It ain't the stars, your daily
horror-scope or anything else. It is YOU. You're
using astrology and whatever else as an excuse.
There are things that influence who you are as
a person - including when you were born - but
even so, there is no greater influence on your life
today than YOU and what you allow to be
programmed into your mind.
Mr. Furey,
I'm trying to increase my repetitions in every
workout but my body feels tired and beat up.
What do you recommend.
Jim
MJF: Jim, do not try to break a record in every
workout in every exercise. At first doing so is easy
because you're not used to the program. Although
I advocate daily training, you do need to rest. This
is best accomplished by doing a different workout
on days your muscles need a rest. Go swimming or
ride a bicycle. Do Combat Conditioning one day -
and Combat Abs - http://mattfurey.com/combat_abs.html
the next. Play around with the order of exercises. Have
a variety of different goals so that you're not always
focused on bettering your best in just one area.
At the same time, be aware that hitting a personal
best will come easier when you're fit AND you have
your mind focused. Sly Chatman, a member of the
Matt Furey Inner Circle, recently looked at his list of
goals and got upset with himself for not being more
determined to make them a reality. He then imagined
his top goal, doing 1000 Hindu squats in a row - something
he'd never been able to do. After visualizing he nailed
1,000 straight in under 30 minutes. So make sure you
do NOT ignore the mental part of your training.
Success is not just work, work, work. If you don't take
time to train your mind - you'll always be a fraction of
what you desire. Your mind is your most important
muscle. Without it, nothing else will work. With it,
the sky is still not the limit.
Get Tough,
Matt Furey
P.S. Enrollment in my fitness seminar is picking up more
and more steam each day. It's awesome to be part of this
event. I feel sorry for the people who've told themselves
they can't make it. There's nothing stopping YOU but YOU -
and if YOU really want to be there - you will find a way to
make it happen. Tis how the Universe works. Go to
http://GetTough.com and make it happen.
Government Giving Away Big Checks
It's about to rain dollar bills.
Today I'm going to clue you in on a huge
giveaway Uncle Sam is doing.
It's called The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008.
Basically, the government is going to send you
a check and hope that you spend it.
Nearly everyone in the US of A is going to get one
of these checks - if they're prepared to ACT
IMMEDIATELY.
The size of the give away depends on how many
buckeroos you make.
The less you make, the bigger the check.
But listen up. In order to get your check from the
government, you need to file your 2007 taxes.
And the faster you file them, the faster that check is
going to be coming your way. Expect them to start
arriving in May.
Now, the fastest way under the sun to get your taxes
done is to file them electronically.
It's safe. It's secure and I just happen to know an accountant
with a nearly fool proof way of getting your taxes in to Uncle
Sam with a minimum of hassles. And it will cost you far less
than visiting your local accountant who charges huge fees.
This means the value of the check you get back from the
government goes up because you didn't pay a fortune to
get your taxes done - and you got them done the right
way the very first time.
The man I want you to meet - in a cyber sort of way, is
Gary Adams. The man is a cyber genius. What he's doing
is helping hundreds of thousands of mom n pops save big
bucks each year by filing their taxes e-lec-tronically.
Gary runs a site called Effie Tax returns - and you can
get there easiest by going to http://mattfurey.com/taxes.html
This site is one of the very few sites trusted by the IRS to
handle online tax submissions. Every once in a while
I see something that will benefit the masses - and I give the
info away for nothing. I think it's a good thing to do from
time to time. It all comes back to me anyway, in some other
way, some other time, so no problem.
Anyway, Gary's site has the highest level of security and offers
help if you have any problems submitting your work.
And what I've just described sure beats waiting in line at a
local shop for some one to screw up your taxes while you wait.
I've known Gary Adams for several years now and his website
processes hundreds of thousands of tax returns each year.
His record is impeccable.
Why. Because he's the real deal - and he had the genius
to develop an idiot proof, no hassle system that works.
With his formula, there's no lost time and no lost wages waiting
for your local accountant to milk you. All you have awaiting you
is time saved, hassle eliminated and a CHECK from Uncle Sam
coming your way - if you've earned one.
So head on over to http://mattfurey.com/taxes.html and get
your taxes done online this time around. I'm betting you'll be
glad you did - especially when you latch onto that big fat
check you've got coming.

The Suicidal Monk
Yesterday was another great day.
Why.
Because so many people are JUMPING on the
ridiculously low fee to come meet The Japanese Superman -
a monk who ran 1,000 marathons through
the snow and rain drenched mountains in
Kyoto, Japan - in seven years.
Then, unsatisfied with his performance, asked
to do it again. The second time he accomplished
the feat in six years.
He's only one in 46 monks who has lived to tell
about this feat in 150 years. The rest died trying.
What's even more remarkable is that this monk,
Sakai Yusai, was over 40 when he joined the
monastery. Almost everyone laughed at the
odds he had of completing the journey. At
61 years of age he completed his last run -
one of 100 double-marathons.
Not just one - but two marathons a day for
the last 100 days.
And what I have just described is only a
fraction of the story.
Next time you think it's tough doing some
pushups, squats, bridging, running a few
hill sprints - or dropping your excess weight -
think again.
Better yet - come meet the monk whose very
presence will inspire you to become far MORE
than you ever considered.
The energy at this event - held this May - will
be explosive. It will launch you out of your
comfort zone - and put you on a path to
greatness.
Go to http://GetTough.com and register before
the fees go up tomorrow.
Matt Furey
P.S. In addition to the running monk, Sakai Yusai,
America's premier warrior, the Governor of Greatness,
Dan Gable, will be on hand to slap your lazy mind
into physical action. Don't miss a moment of this
life transforming event - http://GetTough.com

5 Second Abs for More Energy
In previous messages I've written about
doing the Farmer Burns Stomach Flattener -
http://mattfurey.com/farmerburns.html
in the shower, the car, the bedroom and
so on.
When I write about this incredibly effective
exercise, I normally speak about how it
reduces the waistline and strengthens your
core.
But yesterday, Dave, a Matt Furey Inner Circle
member, put up a message about how he's
been doing this abdominal exercise in the
shower - and how he's found it energizes
him in a big way.
He's absolutely right.
One of things about the Farmer Burns Stomach
Flattener is that is rapidly ramps up your energy
and awareness.
And it doesn't matter where you are when you do it.
Any time you need to recharge or re-energize, you
simply do the breathing and flexing exercises I teach
in Combat Abs - http://mattfurey.com/combat_abs.html -
and you'll go into a different realm very quickly.
Dave says he's been doing very short workouts with
this exercise and a number of others throughout the
day, routines that take only a few minutes - and he's
liking the results he's getting.
This goes to show, once again, that you do not need
to engage in long, long, long workouts to get the
results you want. If you take a couple minutes, every
hour on the hour to do some Hindu pushups, Hindu
squats - http://mattfurey.com/conditioning_book.html -
or the Farmer Burns Stomach Flattener - you'll
be amazed at what it will do for you throughout the
day.
So never let time be an excuse for inactivity. All of us have
the same 24 hours each day. Make a decision to find the
time. Schedule a little mini-workout into your day - and
do it no matter what.
Get Tough,
Matt Furey
P.S. If you're looking for a good book on mental toughness,
check out Mike Chapman's "Wrestling Tough." I just received
a copy and have been reading it to my son. Great stuff. Yours
truly is featured in a few of the chapters. Go to

Strengthen Your Weak Links
The most important muscle in your
body is the one positioned between
your ears.
And the fastest way to increase your
strength, endurance and flexibility is
NOT by working out harder and harder -
although that can be part of the equation.
The fastest way to get results and make your
weak links stronger is to make the connections
between your brain and your body stronger.
This is done in three ways:
1. Proper breathing
2. Powerful use of your imagination
3. Good posture and movement
Let me take a simple exercise to illustrate strength
and weakness. This exercise is called: Getting out of
bed in the morning.
Okay, if you're like most, you wake up to the sound of
an electronic rooster.
And when the rooster crows, you either get out of bed
slowly, almost in a stupor, or you reach over and hit
the snooze button.
Now, why on earth would you do this.
You do it because in your brain you store a mental
picture of yourself getting up groggy - or of hitting
the snooze button for more sleep.
Inside this mental picture are words like, "I'm tired."
Or ""I just need ten more minutes then I'll be fine."
Once the alarm goes off the mental picture of being
damn near comatose fires - along with the words -
and this creates a feeling in your mind/body.
You barely have the strength to get out of bed.
But on the days in which you are going on vacation -
or you have a very important meeting at an early hour -
you carry a different mental picture with vastly different
self-talk. And guess what. On those mornings you pop
out of bed with gusto and a feeling of greatness.
You are far stronger and energetic on that day than the
others.
Now you know the reason.
The same applies with strength and endurance. The fastest
way to improve each of these qualities is to begin changing
the mental picture you have of yourself - along with how
your breathe and move.
Here's a perfect example: Last week I sent out an email
announcing my Get Tough Ultimate Mind-Body Fitness
Challenge - http://gettough.com
A number of Matt Furey Inner Circle members went to the
site and immediately registered. And get this: They were
so inspired just from reading the letter I have on the
site that they worked out harder than ever before. Several
of them did 500-straight Hindu squats for the first time.
One lady did 801-straight Hindu squats.
Prior to doing 500 or 801-straight Hindu squats, these
people had the ability to do what they did. But they
didn't think they could. They never pictured it. They
gave very little thought to it.
Then, after reading about Sakai Yusai doing 1000 marathons
in seven years, their mental pictures were altered. They
realized that their so-called "tough" workout was wimpy
as hell. They realized how they'd pictured themselves being
less than they're capable of.
And so, in their very next workout, they set personal records.
Some of these people have been sore for days. Very sore.
You could say they over-did it. But the truth is they now
know they are capable of much, much more than they
thought - and the reason is because they changed what
they thought about.
Now, here's the clincher.
If these people got that inspired just from reading a letter
promoting the event - what do you think will happen to
them after spending 2.5 days with me and the other
speakers at the event.
What do you think will happen when they're swimming in
a Universe of different thoughts about what is and isn't
possible.
