Don't Listen to Nit-Pickers
Dear Friend,
You and I know what a nit-picker is. In fact, I'm
sure you can put your finger on one right now. At
times the nit-picker can be of value due to his or her
detail orientation toward life - but more often than not,
he's just a lousy excuse for being negative.
The other day I received a letter from someone who
met my son, Frank, for all of about ten minutes. Next
thing you know I'm getting a letter telling me that my
son may have some sort of syndrome.
Turns out this person tried to get rapport with my son
and failed to do so. Naturally, this must mean that my
son is somehow flawed. Couldn't possibly be a flaw in
the person trying to get rapport.
Truth is, neither my son nor the person trying to get
rapport are flawed. Both are fine - it's just that the
older being doesn't understand this yet.
It's a funny thing - but my five-year old son introduces
me at my seminars. Not only that, he does the close.
He is full of vim and vigor and excitement. And I champion
those qualities in him.
Yet, none of the good things about my son were pointed out
by the nit-picker. Only the so-called syndrome.
Well, I'll tell you what "syndrome" my son has. It's called the
success syndrome. He's going to be a bit out-of-step with the
rest of society, and that's the way it should be. I don't want my
son to be normal, to fit inside a nice comfortable box of "shoulds."
I want him to be unique, as he was created to be. And as he is.
I know from experience that my own success is due, in part, to
being out-of-step from the norm. And you better believe I want
my son to be the same way. The same goes for my daughter.
The other day I spoke to my brother, Sean. His daughter is a
star basketball player. She'll most likely go to college on a
basketball scholarship. Yet, funny thing is that her early
"teachers" tried to tell Sean that she wasn't fitting in with the
others. Sean ignored the teachers and told them this was a
"good thing." Today, Sean's daughter is a leader and he and I
are very proud of her.
Yes, there are moments in which others can give us proper
corrective feedback that may be helpful even though it's
painful. But you'd be surprised how often the messenger
is totally off-base and totally out-of-line.
As the great Mark Twain once said, "Better to keep your
mouth shut and remain ignorant than to open your mouth
and remove all doubt."
