Positive News for Today
Dear Friend,
Took my son, Frank, to a Greek breakfast joint this
morning.
Whilst reading the daily newspaper, which I normally
avoid - I found a positive story being reported, for a
change. Imagine that.
And this one made the front page, which is even more
suprising.
The story goes as follows:
Kerry Reardon was on the Howard Franklin Bridge
in St. Petersburg, Florida, teaching his 15-year
old daughter how to drive.
Next thing you know, an SUV blows a tire, bouncess thru
4 lanes of traffic, turns over - then goes sailing over the
bridge, dropping 14 feet into 9 feet of water.
Reardon and his daughter see the entire ordeal. Being
that Reardon used to dive off bridges as a youth in pursuit
of crabs, he knows he can avoid the strong current if he
dives deep enough.
He dives once and cannot find the vehicle, so he gets out
and dives in again. The father, Mujo Jakupovic, his wife, Amira,
and their 13-year old son, Emrah, escaped from the vehicle almost
immediately.
Yet, their seven-year old son, Amar, was still in the submerged
SUV.
On the second dive, Reardon found the vehicle, opened the door
and pulled the boy out. He still had his seat belt on. He brought
the boy to the surface. A nearby fishing boat run by Kenny Hyatt
also saw the accident. He steered his boat toward the family to
help with the rescue.
Then there was a 25-year old nurse on the scene. When she saw
the little boy's Adidas cleat come to the surface she dove in herself
and helped administer CPR.
The father, mother and teenage son are in fair condition as I write
this. The young boy was rescued - but is still in critical condition.
But if the three angels - and that's what people are calling them,
weren't right there at that scene as it happened, the young child
would have drowned.
Tears flooded my eyes as I read this story, making the waiter
wonder what is wrong with me. I handed him the paper to read
for himself. When he came to the close of the story, he wasn't
so dry-eyed himself.
And do you know why. It's because of what the 25-year old
nurse said when asked the temperature of the water.
She remarked that she was on pure adrenaline. Then said, "I
couldn't tell you what the temperature of the water was. It
could have been fire for all I know."
What I have related to you is one of those rare self-less acts
of courage and love. And as much as we want to applaud the
heros - the family in the accident is still recovering.
Don't know about you, but I'm offering my thoughts and prayers
to the little one and gratitude to those who were in the right place
at the right time. Without them there would be no chance of survival.
This story shows us that even in a tragedy there is something good to
come of it if people will act immediately.
That's what kicking butt and taking names is all about.
