The Bench Press Pushup Challenge
65% of your own bodyweight is what you use when doing a regular pushup. No problem, right?
But what if you add the other 35% - and a whole lot more?
by Matt Furey
Bud Jeffries can bench press more than 500 pounds. He's the world's strongest man in drug free competition. And he's a good friend of mine.
He was over to the house last week, giving me some oranges, tangerines and tangelos in exchange for some good old-fashioned fun. Bud loves a challenge. Most men do. Especially those who are world-class tough guys.
I pulled out a device called the Power Pushup 2. You place it behind your back, get into pushup position, slip you thumbs into the soft handles. Attached to each handle are three colored cables. Each color has a different resistance level. The easiest cable gives 20 pounds of added resistance; the toughest gives 100. So with three on each side, the resistance can go from 60 to 300 pounds.

When you do a regular pushup, you're using 65% of your own bodyweight. When you add resistance via the Power Pushup 2, you up the ante considerably.

For monstrosities like Bud, I have the R9 in a handy spot. The R9 is blue. It isn't really for sale. It's more for giving humility lessons. The black model, the R10, is also not for sale. It gives 300 whopping pounds of resistance. No one in the world can do it.
Now Bud is not a cocky smart-mouth type of guy. He's a real down-to-earth sort. He uses "y'all" and "I'm fixin' to" in most conversations ... something I always get a kick out of.
Anyway, I said to Bud in Southern-speak, "Hey Bubba, why don't y'all see if you can do a pushup with this puppy. If'n you can do one ... I'm fixin' to give this baby to ya".
A big Cheshire cat grin crossed Bud's face. His wife was there, too. He had to be thinking, This is gonna be fun. I'm going home with a new gadget.
Bud put the Power Pushup 2 around his back and got on the carpet. He got ready. He snorted a couple of times to psyche up. Then he pushed with all his might. He couldn't budge it. The cables didn't move an inch. I laughed like a hyena.
I Know How He Feels
|
I know how Bud feels. When I first got the Power Pushup 2, I used the red cables. Thinking I was going to have a great workout, imagine my humbling surprise when I couldn't make the cables budge.

I stripped one cable from each side and tried again. I could get one. I stripped a second cable from each side and ... finally, I could do some pushups. And man did they work my chest, arms and shoulders like mad.
Especially My Shoulders
Prior to training with the Power Pushup 2, I had persistent and nagging shoulder pain from an injury to my rotator cuff. Doing pushups often felt like I was aggravating the injury. But with the Power Pushup 2, all of that changed.
When doing pushups and presses with the Power Pushup 2, all the stabilizing muscles of the shoulder shake like leaves blowing in the wind. And this shaking motion is exactly what they need to get stronger; to get rehabilitated. Within two days of using the device, my shoulder was feeling born again. The pain was going away and I could feel myself growing in strength.
I kept using it each day and I got stronger and stronger and stronger. Pretty soon I was up to two cables, then three. And before long I was upgrading to the green cables, which give even more resistance.

What Else
In addition to pushups, you can do dips, alligator walks, standing pushes, seated pushes and lying bench press type pushes. You can use it to add resistance to punches. You can do lunges - even lateral stretches for your shoulders.
|
What you are doing, in addition to strengthening the stabilizers, is adding strength and endurance ... not to mention FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH, to all athletic movements.
|
If you follow a bodyweight calisthenics routine like me, the Power Pushup 2 will make you even stronger in those movements. And if you like to lift weights, you'll benefit as well. Do you know why? Because the key to increasing strength in your lifts lies in adding power to the stabilizing muscles. And the stabilizers (as well as the major muscle groups) are what get a butt-kicking workout everytime you use the Power Pushup 2.
