Pullups vs. Lat Pulldowns - Which is Better?
Dear Friend,
My brother Sean mentioned doing pull ups in one of the last emails, and we
received this response.
Dear Sean,
I started doing pull ups on a regular basis about 9 months ago.
The amazing thing that I have noticed is that the big guys at the gym I workout
at can do 250 pound lat pull downs, but if you ask them to do pullups they might
be able to do 5-8 if they are lucky.
Last week after telling these guys about the benefits of pull ups, I was
challenged.
The challenge was to see who could do the most lat pull downs with 230 pounds.
Well - I lost.
I was able to do 6 reps, and the other three gentlemen did 9, 12, and 13 reps.
I think I need to mention that I weigh 163 pounds, and the other 3 are all over
220 pounds.
However, when I turned the tables and challenged them to a pull up contest things
turned out a little differently.
The most any of them could do in one set was 13.
I was able to do 42 reps in one set.
One thing that all of us learned was that pull ups will help you with lat pull
downs, but lat pull downs will not help your pull ups.
So Sean, keep going with those pull ups.
Respectfully,
Gary Thomas
P.S. The 3 Big Guys now do pull ups at least twice a week.
P.P.S. I will be 50 on 30 September and plan to do 50 pull ups in one set, and
then immediately do 50 dips. Can't think of a better way to celebrate.
M.F.: Gary, 50 pullups in one set is Super Stud Level. You let me know when you
pull it off and I'll give a Fure-cat "I told you so" meow that can be heard round
the world.
Kick butt - take names,

Matt Furey
P.S. Pull ups are one of the best exercises I know, and you can learn all the
different variations in Gama Fitness. For all you
Moms and Dads out there; not only is this a great exercise for you, it's a great
exercise for kids, boys and girls. And if there are monkey bars in the park near
you, get your kids to use them every day.
