What's Speed Got to Do With It?

Dear Friend,

One of the ongoing debates in the fitness world is fast training vs. slow training.

What is my take on this issue?

I'll take you in a moment, but first ...

In previous issues of this daily newsletter I've written about the subject of sprints (which I'll be coming back to very soon).

Today's message, however, is different because I'm talking about SPEED when doing specific body- weight exercises, such as Hindu squats, Hindu pushups and bridging - as well as hand and foot movements, as taught in the Farmer Burns course "Lessons in Wrestling and Physical Culture."

Here's my take on the issue. When you are just beginning to train in these exercises, you do them at a speed that you can control. Furey's Rule is: Never add speed before you have control. If you add speed before you have control, you are inviting injury.

Now, for the monkey wrench: Once you get control and have added speed, you can challenge yourself in another manner by doing your exercises as "slow" as possible.

No, I'm not talking about LSD (long slow distance running) or marathon aerobic sessions. I'm talking about doing squats, pushups, pullups and other exercises as slowly as you can. And do you know what? T'aint easy.

If you've ever watched the performers in Cirque du Soleil, you'll have an idea of what I'm talking about. It is one thing to do a "strongman" feat with lightning like quickness. It is quite another to do is so slowly that you hypnotize the audience.

Now, in case you're wondering, which is better, fast or slow - the answer is neither, both are good.

In fact, getting back to LSD for a moment, I really have nothing against it personally. Endurance training is a way to increase fitness.

But in terms of melting off body fat, increasing lean muscle and promoting the natural release of HGH (the hormone that keeps you young), it's not very good. In fact, if you want to look at the athletes who "show their age" BEFORE their age - it's the LSD crowd. Marathon running and activities like it (which I have done myself) beat your body to shreds and accelarate degeneration of the body, internally and externally.

When I was 25, I didn't care. Today, all I can say is, "Some minds are changed with age."

And that's a good thing.

Well, that's it for now.

Kick butt - take names!
