Many people believe those who succeed do so because of a strong and determined will.
Especially when it comes to dieting and exercise.
Yet, success through a strong and determined will can only get you so far. Most of the time, the will quickly weakens and you end up snapping back to where you were before.
This is called the “snap back effect.”
Like a rubber band that has been pulled to it’s limit, if you release one side it quickly returns to its original position.
This is not to say that will power is never necessary or that you were given it for no reason whatsoever. Your will serves a function – just not as important a function as it’s counterpart, which is usually ignored.
Long ago the truth was established:: “In a battle between will power and imagination, imagination wins every time.”
Walk across a plank that is raised a foot off the ground and you’ll most likely have no trouble. Raise the plank 100 feet off the ground and try again.
What do you think will happen? Most likely you’ll begin to imagine falling – and at this point the fearful image you pictured takes over and your kidneys and adrenals begins to shut down. And when this happens you lose your will and your power to walk forward.
The same thing happens when people go on a diet or begin a new exercise program. At first, everything is gravy. But the plank is only a foot off the ground. Wait till it moves up about 20 feet and you begin picturing all the fearful images that drove you to gain weight in the first place.
Well, what to do?
Snap back or figure out a way to move forward?
I say move forward, but that begs the question – HOW?
If your body shuts down through fear – so does your will.
The only way left is using the part of your mind that you’ve either ignored or used in a negative manner.
Now you’ve got to coral your imagination and put it to work for you in a positive way. You need to picture effortlessly and easily moving forward. You need to see and feel yourself having others congratulate you on your success – and so on.
But even better than that – what if all you had to do was follow a series of psycho-physical exercises that made it easy for you to imagine what you wanted because the exercises eliminated the fear, worry, doubt and other negative emotions.
