A gentleman wrote me recently to tell me how much his posture has improved, how the improvement felt effortless, and how he made the shift without doing any of the standard exercises so many other people teach.
Another wrote to say how much his golf swing has improved with his improved posture.
And another wrote to tell me how he’s got more energy than he’s had in years.
What do all of these men have in common?
We tend to think that if we pull our arms and shoulders back it will improve our posture. And it might help a tiny bit, but ultimately this method fails because the approach is an external one that only lasts a second or two.
Sure, you can temporarily flex your muscles and stiffen your spine to create the illusion of improved posture, but this approach runs out of gas quickly because your muscles are straining and begging for a break. Your muscles must relax after you exercise them this way… but the relaxation is downward, back into the poor posture you are trying to correct.
But when you learn to lengthen and strengthen your body without strain, you automatically adjust your posture into something much, much better, and you do so with effortless ease.
Once you FEEL that your posture is longer and stronger without effort, you will discover that you are more connected. Whether you are sitting or standing or walking or trotting, you remain connected and move as though you are floating.
With this internal method, you may feel that you can walk for hours without fatigue. And if you have painful sensations as you walk, you may find your aches disappearing.
Why? Because much of the pain we feel in our bodies is rooted in poor posture. But when you lengthen the roots you strengthen the body, without effort. This ultimately leads to less pain.
When you learn to stretch your body internally, even from a seated position, it transfers to a change in the way you stand or walk. When you make a shift from the inside-out, not the outside-in, it lasts.
Not only that, the shift inside of you feels so good that you WANT to keep the posture going, indefinitely.
Your posture effects everything about you. It effects your mood, your athletic abilities, your expression of strength and speed. It effects brain and blood flow.
And it effects how others react to you.
This is why I am so big into my Power Postures practice.
