Good question. Here’s the answer: Last week I had a client come to town to get certified as a Combat Conditioning instructor. During the six hours we spent together, I corrected his form, answered his questions – and explained in great detail much of what is not in the book.
I explained what to do if your shoulders hurt when doing pushups. I explained variations of Hindu pushups and squats. I taught him many, many exercises and supplementary details that I had never taught anyone before.
I covered how to train the beginner, as well as the intermediate and more advanced. When our time together was over I returned home, grabbed a copy of my best-selling book, locked myself in my office and went through it again and again. I literally told my wife that I was not to be disturbed until I had this whole thing sorted out. Let me tell you, I wouldn’t even let me son Frank in to see me – and that was pure agony. But it had to be done for me to get clear on what I wanted.

At any rate, I spent three days going over everything I know, everything I’ve learned since the book came out. I made tons of notes on a yellow pad as well as in the book itself. I went over all the things I wanted to alter, improve, remove, add to or change.

The benefits of bodyweight calisthenics have gone well beyond what I originally imagined. When I first wrote the book on them – I was simply letting people know about the superior conditioning program I learned from the legendary Karl Gotch (he taught me this program when he was 75 years old and was still strong as a bear) – a REAL pro wrestler (when there was such a thing) who came to the U.S. from Europe in the 1960’s.
Long considered one of the foremost fighting and fitness authorities, Karl took me under his wing and showed me the smoke and mirrors of modern strength training. Things that turn you and me off. Here are some examples of what I mean:
• The sickening rush for steroids and supplements. Instead of believing in oneself and the training method you follow – people today are brainwashed into believing the “supplement” is what gives them their results. There is certainly nothing wrong with legitimate supplements, and they can assist you – but never forget that YOU and the right program are the key.
• The counterfeit muscles of bodybuilding and how these actually hinder the performance of any combat athlete – as well as make you more injury prone – not less.
• The agonizing reality of the “beat-up” weight lifter. I now have dozens of testimonials from power lifters and others who thought lifting heavier and heavier weights was the true measure of strength. If they only knew (before they started) about the crippling pain they were going to have in their shoulders, elbows, knees and spine.

Now, it is not my intention to bag on weight lifting and weight training. I have plenty of friends who use weights and they ARE strong. What I am saying, though, is that these same people have also found that bodyweight exercises CAN AND DO dramatically improve your overall fitness – not to mention that six-letter word called … H-E-A-L-T-H..
Wish I Knew Then What I Know Now
As a young athlete who became a champion swimmer and wrestler, I learned of a man who did 1000 pushups a day. I modeled him and got stronger and stronger. Then, because there was nobody around to teach me how to get the most out of myself through body weight exercises, I turned to weight training.
Even though I believed there was a way to train on bodyweight exercises exclusively, and get everything, and then some, that I wanted from such a program – I didn’t have anyone who could show me the way – until I met Karl Gotch in 1999. So I pumped iron and trained with weights, even though I didn’t really like doing so.
The Best Coaches Money Could Buy
Now, let me just say, I’ve been through intense training with the world’s top Olympians and Olympic coaches. I trained under the legendary Dan Gable at the University of Iowa. Gable was a 1972 Olympic champion and coached Iowa to 15 NCAA titles in 21 years. I trained under Bruce Baumgartner, a 2x Olympic champion and 4x Olympian. I’ve trained under J Robinson, the head coach at University of Minnesota (they’ve won the nationals as a team the past two years). I’ve trained under Dr. Daniel Weng – the top Shuai-chiao kung fu teacher in the country, who guided me to a world title in China – where I became the only American to ever beat the Chinese, in their own country, at their own game.
And so, let me tell you I had a lot of reasons to think I was already fit enough, already strong enough. But when I met Karl Gotch my perception shifted. Under his tutelage I learned the following …
Until you learn to move your body with full power from every direction and angle – the way you see animals moving about in nature – you’re not in condition.
My limitations became painfully obvious when Karl taught me the same exercises used by The Great Gama – India’s top athlete and wrestler at the turn of the 20th century. Gama was one of the most revered fighters to ever walk the planet. He disposed of his opponents so quickly it was scary.
Gama was in such great shape from his training regimen that he is said to have won 5000 matches without a loss.
Like all wrestlers in India, Gama did Hindu squats, Hindu pushups (also known as dands and bethaks) as well as bridging, pillar work, club swinging – and so on.
Gama did many things to put himself in top-notch condition. And I’m going to cover them in my new course, which is appropriately named after him – Gama Fitness.
By following the lesson plan laid out in this course, you can expect your current level of fitness to go through the roof. Afterall, when you model success you can expect to become successful yourself.
Now, there are some places where I will deviate from what Gama did – but this is important to do for a couple reasons. First of all, I don’t think you’ll want to wear a large stone ring around your neck when you do your squats and pushups – nor will you be able to find one in any stores. Second, I don’t think you’ll have access to the heavy Indian clubs Gama used to swing around. Nor do you need them.
Not to worry.
I have a few sets of Indian clubs myself – and I have used them enough to know their value. Don’t get me wrong – they are good – but when tested alongside other methods of training to see which was the best – they didn’t hold up.
What I have to teach you is superior to the Indian clubs for increasing functional strength and overall fitness. Although Indian clubs have a certain mystique about them – and although they are “traditional,” there is a better way to cut to the chase and get the results you want. Some tradition is great – but only if it still works better than everything else. Right? And so, I’m of the opinion that if Gama were around today, he’d agree with the slight deviations and adjustments I’ve made.
Remember: Although I was already an accomplished elite-level athlete with several major championships to lay claim to (including both national and world titles) – when I first learned Gama’s methods – I felt like I had been “put through the ringer.”
Sure, I was strong on the weights – but I was a weakling when it came to using my own bodyweight. Yes, there is a BIG difference between functional strength training and bodybuilding.
After using the Gama Fitness exercises on a regular basis – and after getting good at them, I noted the following:
1. My combat skills improved dramatically.
2. I was more focused and had intense laser-like concentration.
3. I was far more confident in everything I did.
4. My muscles were not just stronger. They were also more flexible.
5. In a combat situation, my sensitivity to what others were trying to do became nearly “psychic.”
6. My energy levels sky-rocketed.
7. I slept better and was unaffected by negative stress.
8. Aches and pains that I had had for well over a decade, that were brought on from weight training and hard wrestling practice, just went away. This includes the lower back pain I had from the time I was 20 years old.
