Q: Matt, what are the secrets to flexibility as you age? Are you still able to make improvements? I’m 63 and I have this idea in my head that once you get to a certain age that your muscles get stiff and there’s nothing you can do to counter that. True?
A: What once was “true” has been proven false. Here’s a different idea to put in your head. Flexibility comes down to two things: consistency and a program that is naturally easy to follow.
I continue to improve my flexibility and I’m less than a year behind you.
Here’s one of the things I do.
Because most people sit in chairs or on comfy sofas all day long, I make sure I sit on the floor for extended periods of time each day, starting with the idea of only doing so for “a few minutes.”
The flexibility fix isn’t hardcore stretching sessions.
It’s beginning with the low-hanging fruit.
It’s becoming apelike again.
Initially, as you sit on the floor, spread your legs as far as comfortable. Then hang out there as you switch positions every minute or so.
If you will do this everyday for a few minutes, you’ll be amazed at how your body begins to effortlessly change, and how you want more.
A few minutes easily leads to 30 minutes – especially when you realize how much better this practice is making you feel.
You’ll be more connected, more energetic and looser.
And when you want to go further than you’ve gone before, my Combat Stretching course will take you there.
