There are many things I could say about the legendary Bruce Lee and how he trained.
He did bodyweight calisthenics. He ran. He lifted weights.
But perhaps his biggest secret to his incredible skill is NOT that he trained in a bunch of different martial arts, other than Ving Tsun, and did a lot of different exercises.
It is that he trained in the methods of INTERNAL POWER and STRENGTH that I have been advocating for many, many years – but previously only taught to my private clients.
What were those methods?
Traditionally, they were the holding of various animal and martial postures for long periods of time.
In fact, those in the know in the internal martial arts world, will tell you that the postures and stances that Bruce Lee held were kept secret because his instructor from China, who lived in Seattle, where Lee lived, did not want fame and notoriety. He did not want a bunch of students, just a chosen few.
Bruce Lee was fortunate to be one of them.
As it turns out, the Chinese method of internal strength and power has a major “eat bitter” element to it. It is similar to the western model of “train to failure” or “no pain-no gain.”
The way I see it, “eating bitter” is one approach, and I followed it in the past – but for me, it’s not the way to go.
That’s why I have a unique approach, one that incorporates various postures and stances – but more importantly, also applies the use of spiraling energy and movement.
This helps regulate your system so you can improve and recharge your mind and body. The key is not too much, not too little.
The approach I advocate also ensures that the energy in your body is continuously flowing in a connected way.
This means, you don’t go numb in your feet or legs from holding a position for longer than it practical or useful.
When you train the way I suggest, your body is similar to the leaves and branches of a tree. They may appear to be “just standing there,” but they are, in fact, always moving.
There is movement in the stillness and stillness in the movement.
That’s the way I teach it in my Power Postures program – a unique and extraordinary method for getting the most from your body, helping it heal itself and get stronger from the inside-out, without appearing to be doing much of anything.
