Several years ago, while attending a martial arts workshop, the master told a story about the day he was pushing himself so hard on a stair-stepper machine, that his teacher came up to him, patted
him on the shoulder and whispered, “Don’t scare yourself.”
At the time, being younger and greener, this future master didn’t understand what his teaching, a grandmaster, meant.
Then one day he figured it out.
What the grandmaster meant was this: When you train excessively hard, when you engage in extreme fitness regimens, especially when this is your normal way of training, you are frying your brain
and nervous system, the very organ you need on your side when push-comes-to-shove.
Once the master figured out what the grandmaster meant, his life changed for the better.
He stopped doing the EXTREME all the time. He trained at far less than his maximum most of the time. And every two weeks, he would push himself hard, to test his limits.
What was the result?
To his amazement, he made FAR MORE PROGRESS.
His brain and nervous system were on his side, working for him instead of against.
Recently, a well-known fitness celebrity, one who championed EXTREME workouts, the ones where you push yourself to failure, told his followers why he appeared to age 30 years in a short period of time.
Turns out he has a nervous system disorder. He has trouble with basic balance, even when walking.
Does he train to the MAX anymore?
No.
His body will no longer let him.
Did his workouts lead to the breakdown he experienced?
Based on what I have come to realize, I think there’s a good chance of that being the case. Regardless, I wish this man well and sincerely hope his situation improves in a big
way.
Now, regarding my current approach to health, fitness, and internal strength, which are covered in my Power Postures program, I am aware that some people scoff and laugh.
They think, you cannot possibly get stronger by sitting, standing or even lying still, in various postures.
But those who follow this program are getting the last laugh. They aren’t scaring themselves. They aren’t frying their nervous systems.
They are awakening the internal strength and power with their bodies, from the inside-out, with no extreme training at all.
Instead of getting out of their comfort zones, these people are FINDING their comfort zones, and they keep getting better and better and better.
Imagine that.
