Q: Matt, I’ve heard that hard-core training is the only way to go if you want results. I’ve heard that even if you’re old you need to lift heavy shit otherwise your bones will deteriorate and you’ll lose your grip on life. Any suggestions?
A: Last night I walked straight past everyone in the gym. In the locker room where the sauna is located, two gents primped and posed before a mirror. That’s when I remembered the joke a truth fairy told me one day when I was practicing Tai Chi.
“There are two types of people who go to the gym: Those who move from station to station and don’t appear to be getting any results and those who are clogging up the mirrors.”
To answer your question, I’ve met plenty of old Tai Chi masters who’ve never lifted much more than a scroll, and they don’t have any trouble throwing a young man around who lifts heavy stuff.
The more weight you lift the more your body resembles heavy furniture that is easy to move. Your legs, arms and spine are easy to manipulate.
But to move a white crane or a black cobra, you better have “higher knowledge” if you want to live to yap about it.
Although a crane doesn’t look rugged and has soft flowing movements, its bones are powerful and dense, allowing it to fly as much as 500 miles in a single day. It’s neck, legs and wings are limber, loose and closer to the Almighty.
As for a cobra, it can coil into a ball, stand without legs and move in any direction.
People who practice Tai Chi are practicing the movements of animals in nature, and as a result they develop something better than hard-core strength.
It’s called HA-CORE STRENGTH. It’s a strength that can laugh and toy with humans, no matter how good they look in the mirror.
