A lot of men don’t have this fear. They carry on, day after day in their merry little way, working out the way they always have. Or not doing any exercise at all.
Until… they feel a sharp, agonizing pain in their hips, knees or lower back.
No big deal, they think. It’ll go away. And hopefully, it does.
But the unacknowledged situation these men may encounter is what Stewart told me about recently. He’s a guy who practiced karate religiously, never missing a single day. In addition to his martial arts practice, he walked several miles per day and worked out in the weight room. He thought his body was bullet-proof because of all the training he did.
And then one day he felt a stabbing pain in his hip. Everything went downhill from there.
He had his right hip replaced. Within a year of having that surgery, he started having trouble with his left hip. Simple enough, replace that one, too.
All was well, until his right knee started to give way.
I’ll stop there. It’s a gory story.
But my point is this: People assume that because they work out everyday, that they’re not doing damage to their bodies. Even worse, many assume that because they don’t work out, their joints will be fine… forever.
I make no such assumptions. I fear the surgeon’s scalpel, his hack-saw, his hammer and chisel, and whatever else he uses.
This fear serves me well. It motivates me to get up each day and follow the routine I teach. It forces me to make no assumptions, to do the best I can to preserve my joints for my entire life.
And it’s why I am so adamant about teaching what I have learned over the years to help preserve my joints. I’m now 60 years of age and my joints are doing well. Meanwhile, I know plenty of people, some of whom were my coaches and teammates four decades ago, that had joints replaced in their 40’s.
Many of them lived in pain for years. After their surgeries they said it was the best thing they ever did.
I empathize with these people. After all, many of them were my coaches and teammates. They are my friends.
At the same time, I want to avoid the surgeon for as long as humanly possible, preferably for the rest of my life. I want to live a pain-free life. And that’s one of the reasons why I train the way I do.
If you want to be pain-free as well, or avoid further surgeries (if you’ve already had one), my Power Postures program might just do the trick for you. It’s definitely helped a lot of other men (and women) who are following along with me on a daily basis.
