A woman in her 80’s puts most of her neighbors, and almost everyone else, to shame.
She definitely puts the weak and “woke” down without saying a word.
For the past eight years, I’ve seen this quiet lady emerge from her home and go for a walk. She’s out the door at 7:20 AM, regardless of the weather. She hikes through our community for well over an hour at a somewhat moderate pace, covering at least four miles. She never says “hello” to me or anyone else, but she does smile and wave.
Most of the time she is wearing shorts that reveal sinewy, ultra-ripped muscles in her calves and thighs. There’s no loose, hanging skin. There’s no cottage cheese cellulite.
From the neck down, you would never think this woman is in her so-called “golden years.”
Although walking does a body good, unless you’re banged up (see yesterday’s message 5 Signs You Are Walking Too Much), you don’t get legs such as this woman’s from walking alone. You get them from combining squats and other leg exercises with your walking.
This was my working hypothesis about her, based upon decades of experience training myself and others.
Three days ago I got all the proof I needed. In the mid-afternoon, when it was hot and muggy, I was out walking the dogs when the lady softly strolled across her lawn with a gardening tool.
She stopped in front of a bed of flowers and effortlessly lowered herself into an ass-to-grass squat. And there she remained, digging, prying and pulling, for five minutes.

Then she got up with just as much ease, moved a few feet to her right, and squatted again.
After putting the dogs inside, I began watering the wide assortment of bamboo trees we have, and noted that this lady’s up-and-down gardening squat workout continued for almost an hour.
Prior to this moment, I thought I was the ONLY ONE in the neighborhood who could drop into a squat this way, and remain there for long periods of time.
Prior to this moment, I had only seen men outdoors doing yard work, gardening and digging in the dirt.
Prior to this moment, I had only imagined that this woman would eventually reveal the secrets to her stunning calves and thighs.
This is not genetics, my friend.
