I’m going to go out on a limb here. I’m going to write something that will most likely upset a lot of people.
After the age of 40, if you’re still lifting heavy weights or pumping heavy iron, you’re harming yourself far more than you’re helping. And you run the risk of living the rest of your life in pain.
Yes, I realize there are plenty of people older than forty who still pump iron, and they’ll swear by it. And hey, if that is what they want to do, no argument from me.
Yet, in most of these cases, if you’ll explore deeply – and IF those who are pumping the heavy duty iron were to ‘fess up’ – you’d know that they have back pain, shoulder pain, elbow and knee pain – and a lot of muscular pain. When they get out of bed each day, it’s a struggle to get to the showers.
In many respects, their body is trashed from being thrashed. Yet they’re too macho to stop – or to stubborn to admit the truth to themselves.
Or they’re just plain ignorant of the fact that body weight exercises are FAR superior in many, many ways.
I used to be there myself – until I woke up one April afternoon back in 1999. Since that time all the stiffness, all the residual pain, and all the ailments I had already accumulated – left me.
I was 36 then. Beat up from years of weights, wrestling and martial arts training – but MOSTLY from weights.
When I gave up the weights in favor of other methods of training that had a much better track record – one that included improved joint health, agility, mobility, strength, endurance and flexibility – I never looked back.
But I have looked at all the banged up, beaten to the pulp bodies of the macho weight lifters. They may be able to put on a good show in public – but I assure you, in private they are constantly patching themselves back together.
When you train with your own bodyweight, you can simultaneously increase strength, endurance and flexibility – and do so without all the unnecessary risks of pumping iron.
If you feel you must train with iron after the age of 40, heed my suggestions. Do NOT train with heavy weights. Instead, use lighter weights and focus like a laser. It’s been proven over and over that you can become a strongman without using heavy weights. The Mighty Atom, Joseph Greenstein, is a perfect example of this.
And if you’d like to begin feeling like you’ve reversed the time clock, then I strongly encourage you to go deeper within your body, into the very meridians and core where internal energy and chi flow are king – not the size of your muscles.
