And now we come to the subject of WHEN is the best time of the day to get your workout in.
This may surprise you, but the answer is: Whenever.
Whenever what?
Whenever it fits for you. There is no definitive “when to workout.” There is no best time fits all. It’s not 5 AM. It’s not Noon. It’s not 8 PM. It’s whenever you choose to do it, based upon when you are ready to roll and rock. Pick a time. Any time – and be consistent about it.
Let me give you an example: Most of the time I get my main workout in sometime late in the evening. Some nights it’s 10 PM. Other nights it’s 11 PM. And sometimes it is even later than that.
Last night I got my main workout (and I keep stressing the word “main,” because I’m a believer in short workouts throughout the day) in at 2 AM.
I was working on a project quite late and the clock kept on ticking, even though I was totally unaware of the time. That’s what happens to a writer. We lose track of time… often.
Anyway, when I looked at the clock I noted that it was 1 AM. And being there’s a 24-hour gym I can go to, I hopped in my gas-guzzler and took off.
My workout began in the sauna, where I did a variety of top secret exercises, that I’ll be showing to members of the Furey Faithful later this week (plug, plug). I was one of only two people in the sauna at that hour, which was nice. I went through my routine for 20 minutes and left a fine puddle of salty sweat on the floor for the janitor to clean up later.
Then I showered and inserted myself into the swimming pool. I continued with a variety of other top secret exercises until 2:02 AM, then I went through the water for another 20 minutes before proclaiming, “Finished.”
The above was followed by another shower. Then I drove home, read for an hour, and hit the hay circa 4 AM.
Now, being I am my own BOSS, I can get up whenever I so choose. This means I can also get my training in whenever I want.
The key takeaway is that YOU figure out how to fit YOUR main workout into YOUR schedule. You do it when YOU want to do it, not when some overlord tells you to do it.
If you’re obsessed with time management and all those other sillyisms; if you prefer everyday to be Groundhog Day, then pick a time and get after it everyday at the same time. I realize it sounds as though I’m poking fun, and I am to an extent… but if that’s the way you have to be to get your training in, then do it that way.
Personally, I don’t let the clock run my life. I simply make sure that I get my training in sometime in the evening. And that’s what works best for me, except for when it doesn’t.
Huh?
Yes, sometimes I get my main workout in at 7 or 8 AM. Or at Noon.
It all depends. But there is one constant in all of this. I get my workout in, one way or another. The training is going to get done.
Kick ass – take names.

Oh, here’s another shout-out regarding that Furey Faithful thing. Top secret workout information coming out this week. If you’re a member, look for it. If not, NOW is probably a grand ole time for you to enroll. Me thinks it definitely IS, especially if you love doing isometrics and that sort of thang.
