It’s only fitting to write something about sitting.
People are being told that sitting is the worst thing you can do for your body. I’m here to tell you the opposite.
Sitting kicks ass, so long as you do more and more of it on the floor.
People grow old too soon and become less mobile and less grounded because they’ve lost contact with Mother Ground.
Every time you lower yourself to sit on the floor you are activating areas of the body that don’t get used when you plop into a comfy chair. And the longer you remain on the floor the more positions you will naturally move into, especially in the beginning when it doesn’t take long for the ole bones to bark at you.
If you’ve been rumping it all day on the couch or lazy boy, you don’t want to immediately jump into sitting on the floor the entire day. Start with five minutes and allow the time you spend on the floor to expand.
Each time you change positions on the floor, you’re not just moving your body, you’re also recharging your DNAC (don’t need a chair). You’ll also find that getting off the floor will be almost as important, health wise, as getting onto it.
Back in my California days, I recall training a two-pack man, Eugene, who was 94. By two-pack, I mean that Eugene smoked two packs of cigarettes a day. That in and of itself was an accomplishment at his age.
Anyway, Eugene told me he was having trouble getting out of a chair as well as out of bed. So the first exercise I had him do was sit in a chair and return to standing. At first he had to use his hands, but after a couple sessions, his leg strength had improved to the point that he could squat and come back up while lighting a Marlboro, if I would have allowed that in my gym, which I did not.
After the chair squats, I helped him lie on his back, then showed him the easiest way to come to a seated position, followed by standing. It was slow in the beginning, but after a couple weeks, Eugene was making child’s play out of the exercise.
Mother Ground was Eugene’s friend. Yours, too. Put your rumpus on her, then push off, over and over again. The rewards of doing so will astound you.
