There’s a Chinese saying, “The cat is the tiger’s teacher.”
When I first heard this over 20 years ago, I wondered how this was so. After all, couldn’t a tiger snack on 99 cats in between a deer and a pig?
Turns out the answer is simpler than you might think. The cat taught the tiger everything it knows, except one thing: how to climb a tree.
That’s right. Although jaguars and leopards can climb trees, tigers can’t.
Interesting, eh?
And yes, I know that cats sometimes can’t figure out how to come down from a tree, but that’s another lesson for another day.
Turns out there’s something else that’s important for human beings to know.
Cats can jump five to six times their height. They can do the same lengthwise.
How far is five to six times a cat’s height or length?
Six to eight feet.
And the cats jump this distance from a standstill; they don’t need a running start.
This jump-ability is only one of the reasons that I teach the cat in the Warrior Walking course.
By the way, I got an intriguing email from Paul last night,
“I just watched Cat Step and I am bowled over by what you’ve done here. I’ve had a fair amount of tai chi and kung fu training at the serious hobbyist/fitness level. So I already know this material. Wait—can’t say know! That’s the opposite of training and learning and improving. DO! Do old, do new, do and re-do YOU. Warrior Walking by Matt Furey looks like a dream come true for the busy, the modern, the sincere. This is value.”
Thank you, Paul. And that’s just the first walking pattern. Seven more after that.
The cat alone puts in an incredible spring in your step. You won’t be able to jump five to six times the height or length of your body – but what you’re currently able to do will be amplified – BIG TIME.
I look at it this way, 100 catlike steps per day can help keep the surgeons away.
