Itching for More?
Dear Matt,
You talk about the importance of daily fitness and career goals which I agree with, but I’m concerned that if I take a day off from my workouts and such I’ll lose my edge and start to go backward. What say you? Do you ever take a day off? Is there ever a day you don’t have a goal?
Dan S.
Dear Dan S.,
There’s an old jive tale that taking a day off is the beginning of the end. As an athlete and martial artist, I heard it numerous times… and bought into it. Writers and creators hear this same drivel, too. I bought into in there, too. Oh my God, if you rest you’re going to rust. Sad, but completely untrue.
But when I put aside the advice and admonishments that I heard and looked at my real-life experience, I discovered something amazing. The brain continues to work (myelinate) something when you are resting – and this doesn’t conclude in a few hours. It can go on for days.
In even simpler terms, though, I look at something I call the “itch factor.” Here’s what it means to me: When I take a day off, do my palms itch (physically or symbolically)? Does a day off make me want to engage in my practice even more than if I continued without a rest? More importantly, does my performance improve after a day of rest?
I can speak for myself and the people I have taught this to: A Day of Rest Does a Mind and Body GOOD. It makes you WANT to GET BACK TO WORK. And when you re-engage, you discover that you’re better, not worse.
As for whether I ever give my daily goal quest a rest, the answer is YES and NO. Theoretically, I rest on Sunday, but in all actuality, my brain’s goal for the day is… REST. This means that even when I am not working on a goal, my brain is still working on one.
Here endeth the lesson.

P.S. GOOD NEWS. A few seats opened in the Goal-Getting™ Intensive I am having on Wednesday, January 15, at 7 PM EST. How so? Well, because some of the people who enrolled cannot attend LIVE as it will be 1 AM in their country, they will only get a recording of the event. It’s best if you can attend LIVE, but if not, no worries. It opens up more seats. And that’s why I can still take a few more… provided you act quickly. The Goal-Getting™ Intensive will be a two-hour presentation, followed by a QnA, that will begin to immediately change your life the second you do what I am teaching you to do. There is a fee involved, $197, which is ridiculously low compared to the results you can get from following my method. Only a few seats remain. Interested? Then email me: goals@psycho-cybernetics.com and I will get you the information to register.
